A Space for the Stories That Were Never Safe to Tell

Let me start by saying this: if you’ve landed here because something inside you is stirring — a quiet discomfort, a tiredness you can’t quite name, or maybe just a whisper of maybe therapy could help — I’m so glad you’re here.

I’m Jessica Russell, LCSW-S, and I’m the founder of Olive Branch Counseling. I still remember what it felt like to carry a story that didn’t feel safe to tell — one that felt “too much,” “too complicated,” or maybe just… invisible. I also remember how powerful it was to finally be seen without needing to explain or earn that space.

That’s what Olive Branch was created for.

Not just to be another therapy office, but to be a place where people,  especially those carrying complex trauma, could walk through the door and exhale. A place where you don’t have to be “high-functioning” or hold it all together to be worthy of care. A place where your nervous system can begin to soften before you even say a word.

Because what I believe (and what we believe as a practice) is that therapy isn’t about fixing broken people. It’s about honoring powerful human beings who have had to survive in really painful ways, and who are finally ready to heal.

For the Ones Who Are “Doing Fine” — but Feel Disconnected

So many of the clients we work with are the ones everyone turns to. The responsible ones. The achievers. The caretakers. They’re showing up for their families, succeeding in their careers, functioning well enough that people wouldn’t guess anything is wrong.

But underneath the surface, there’s often a quiet tension.
Maybe you feel anxious all the time and can’t figure out why.
Maybe you’ve gotten really good at being who other people need you to be, but somewhere along the way, you lost touch with who you actually are.
Maybe your body is always braced; for rejection, for disappointment, for the next thing.

I see this so often in people who have lived through complex trauma. The kind that doesn’t come from one big event, but from growing up in environments where you weren’t emotionally safe, or where your needs were ignored, minimized, or punished. It’s trauma that taught you to shrink, to scan for danger, to keep the peace, or to stay quiet so you wouldn’t rock the boat.

It’s the kind of trauma that doesn’t always show up in obvious ways, but it stays in the body. In your posture. In your tone. In how you relate to others and, maybe most painfully, how you relate to yourself.

That’s the kind of pain Olive Branch was built to hold.

Why I Had to Build Something Different

When I imagined opening a group practice, I knew I didn’t want to create a place where people were pathologized or treated like a diagnosis. I wanted something different. I wanted a space that felt human. Where you didn’t have to translate your pain into a perfectly worded sentence just to be believed. Where you didn’t have to apologize for your coping mechanisms. Where being “too much” or “too sensitive” was never part of the conversation.

I wanted a place where we saw the whole person, not just their symptoms.
Where therapists weren’t the experts on you, but collaborators with you.
Where healing wasn’t rushed, forced, or standardized, but instead met with reverence and pacing.

And honestly? I wanted it to feel warm. I wanted you to walk in and feel softness. Safety. A place that didn’t feel clinical, but relational.

Because at the end of the day, healing is about connection. To yourself, to others, and to the parts of your story that you’ve had to tuck away in order to survive.

Complex Trauma Needs More Than a Diagnosis Code

One of the things I’m most passionate about (and what so many of our clinicians share) is working with clients who have experienced complex trauma. Not everyone uses that term, but if you’ve felt like your pain never had a “label” or if you’ve been dismissed because your story didn’t fit into one box, this might be you.

Complex trauma often comes from chronic emotional neglect, childhood unpredictability, relational abuse, or being asked to carry roles (like caretaker, peacekeeper, emotional support) long before you were ready.

It’s trauma that doesn’t just live in your thoughts; it lives in your body.

In your nervous system.
In the way you flinch when someone gets too close, not physically, but emotionally.
In the way your chest tightens when someone asks what you need.
In the way you over-explain, over-perform, or disappear.

That’s why our work at Olive Branch is rooted in modalities that go deeper than just talk therapy. We use EMDR, somatic work, parts work, and trauma-informed DBT, not as a trendy list of tools, but because your healing deserves a multifaceted, compassionate approach that honors all of you.

You Are Not Too Much. You Are Not Broken.

If no one’s ever told you this before (or maybe if you need to hear it again) let me say it clearly:

You are not broken.
You are not weak for wanting support.
You are not dramatic or difficult or behind.
You are a whole, powerful, complex human being who has learned to survive in ways that make sense. And now, you get to do more than survive.

Therapy isn’t about getting “fixed.” It’s about getting free.

It’s about noticing how your nervous system moves through the world — and then gently, with support, offering it something new.
It’s about returning to your body as a place of safety, not tension.
It’s about rewriting the story that says you are too much or not enough — and finally living in a story that feels like your own.
