The Year You Held More Than Anyone Knew
There’s this strange thing that happens at the end of the year.
Everyone starts moving faster. Squeezing things in. Rushing toward closure. Pushing for one last burst of productivity or reflection.
But your body might not be on board.
You might feel foggy. Numb. Restless.
You might feel like you’re behind, even if you’re doing everything “right.”
You might wonder, why can’t I just get it together already?
But here’s the thing: your nervous system doesn’t care what month it is.
And it doesn’t know how to fake peace just because it’s December.
Healing Doesn’t Follow the Calendar
Our culture is built on deadlines, resolutions, and clean starts.
And it can be tempting to believe that your emotional life should follow suit.
But healing (especially trauma healing) doesn’t move in straight lines or by dates on a planner.
Maybe you’re still holding onto things from the summer.
Maybe your grief started in April and hasn’t loosened its grip.
Maybe your nervous system is still on alert from a conversation that happened six months ago.
Trauma doesn’t expire when the holidays roll around.
Which means rest, processing, and nervous system regulation may not look festive, but they’re still valid.
The Nervous System Has Its Own Timeline
When you’ve experienced trauma, whether from childhood, a toxic relationship, or just years of emotional suppression, your body learns how to survive.
And those survival patterns don’t disappear just because it’s time to “wrap up the year.”
You might notice:
- Feeling overstimulated by crowds or noise
- Emotional shutdown at family gatherings
- Restlessness or irritability despite “happy” events
- A sense of dread with no obvious cause
- Emotional flashbacks that feel disproportionate to the moment
None of this means you’re broken.
It means your nervous system is doing its job. It just hasn’t been given enough cues of safety yet.
That’s why somatic trauma therapy is so effective.
It helps the body learn that it’s safe to let go. Not through logic, but through felt experience.
What Somatic Therapy Actually Looks Like
If you’re new to somatic therapy, it can sound a little… abstract.
But really, it’s just the practice of helping your body catch up to what your brain already knows.
It might look like:
- Learning to recognize your fight/flight/freeze patterns
- Using breath or movement to downshift your nervous system
- Noticing sensations instead of overriding them
- Staying present with emotions without needing to fix them
- Reclaiming your body as a safe place, not just a problem to manage
At Olive Branch Counseling, we pair somatic work with EMDR and parts work to create a deeper, more integrated healing process — especially for those navigating complex trauma or nervous system dysregulation.
When the Season Doesn’t Match Your Body
You don’t need to be joyful just because the lights are up.
You don’t need to be reflective just because the calendar says December.
You don’t need to be productive just because the year is ending.
If you’re tired; that makes sense.
If you’re sad; that’s real.
If you’re feeling disconnected from yourself; that’s a sign to slow down, not speed up.
This time of year can be overwhelming for trauma survivors, highly sensitive people, and anyone who’s spent the year over-functioning to survive.
So if your nervous system feels off, believe it.
That’s not failure. That’s feedback.
Regulation Before Resolution
Instead of forcing yourself into goals, growth, or gratitude, what if you focused on regulation first?
Because no amount of vision boards can land when your body is in survival mode.
Try asking yourself:
- What part of me is needing attention right now?
- What would help me feel 2% safer in this moment?
- What does my body need — not just what my schedule says?
These questions are simple, but they shift everything.
They help you meet yourself where you are, not where you “should” be.
You Don’t Have to Power Through Alone
We know the end of the year can stir up everything you thought you already worked through.
It’s okay if it feels harder now than it did a few months ago.
That doesn’t mean you’re regressing.
It means you’re ready for deeper healing.
If your body has been carrying stress, trauma, or emotional numbness for longer than you can remember, you deserve support that honors more than just your symptoms.
You deserve therapy that listens to your nervous system.
At Olive Branch Counseling in Plano, we offer trauma-informed therapy, EMDR, somatic work, and virtual sessions across Texas. We see the whole person — not just the parts performing well.
We’re also now accepting Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) and can check your benefits for you.
Let This Be the Season of Listening Inward
Your nervous system doesn’t need resolutions.
It needs care.
And if you’re ready to stop overriding what your body has been whispering all year, we’re here to walk with you. Gently, slowly, and with deep respect.
Whether you start therapy now or next year doesn’t matter as much as knowing that healing is possible.
No deadlines.
No pressure.
Just support.
You’ve held a lot this year.
You don’t have to hold it all alone.
